One in every four Americans is a baby boomer, those born from 1946 to 1964. It is the largest population group in the history of the US. The toy and baby food industry went crazy, then someone designed the two seater mustang and that took off. Then it was time for the baby boomers to start having kids and SUVs came out. Today health the wellness industry is the fastest growing market in the world.

Anti-aging and wellness is about protecting your boy against free radicals and about feeding your cells what they need. We’re going to talk about feeding your cells but first a physiology lesson.

The Periodic Table elements constitute all matter. There are approximately one hundred of these. Atoms are the smallest part of an element that retains all the properties of that element and elements are made of only one kind of atom. Atoms of different elements make up molecules; molecules make up cells. A cell is the smallest structural unit of living matter. Cells make up tissues; two or more tissues make up organs; and several organs working together make up the systems that make up our body. There are things that stand in the way of them getting their job done like not getting enough oxygen, being damaged by trauma, extreme temperature or radiation, chemical agents like carbon monoxide poisoning, electromagnetic pollutants, infectious agents like tapeworms and plagues, immunologic reactions like your own immune system attacking you or an allergic reaction to something, genetic derangements and, what we’re going to talk about, not getting the proper nourishment from what we eat.

Let’s say that you’ve had blood, hair and saliva tests or you're into Traditional Chinese Medicine and the doctor has determined what your body is deficient in. What is inflammation?

Inflammation is the first response of the immune system to infection or irritation. We are all familiar with the classic signs of inflammation (swelling, redness and pain) that occur when we hurt ourselves or have some kind of infection. However recent research has shown that eating the wrong foods can cause inflammation within our bodies. In fact being overweight can itself be the cause of inflammation.

Body fat causes inflammation

The fatty tissues of the body secrete hormones that regulate the immune system and inflammation, but in the case of an overweight individual this can become out of control. Three of the hormones that play a role in metabolism are leptin, resistin and adiponectin.

Leptin is involved in appetite control.
Resistin is a hormone that increases insulin resistance.
Adiponectin lowers the blood sugar by making your body more insulin sensitive.

The fact that it is the fatty tissue that produces these hormones makes the fat self regulating, as the hormones should act to bring the increased fat under control. Bodies with more fat will produce more leptin bringing the appetite under control. However in cases where the body is inflamed there is often a problem with leptin resistance, and the self regulation of fat does not occur. Leptin resistance is where the body stops responding to the appetite controlling effects of the hormone.

In addition to these metabolism regulating hormones your fatty tissue also produces chemicals that cause inflammation and this can make the problem of leptin resistance worse. This is why obesity can cause an increase of these inflammatory chemicals which in turn inhibit the correct balancing function of the weight controlling hormones. This results in a vicious circle of weight gain causing inflammation which inhibits hormone function thereby causing further weight gain.

Food and inflammation

Another major cause of inflammation in our bodies is the food we eat. Inflammation can be aggravated by diets high in refined or hydrogenated vegetable oils such as those found in margarines, potato chips and baked goods and by diets high in sugars. But food can also be part of the solution to the problem of inflammation.
Anti-inflammatory foods, if eaten regularly, can reduce inflammation in the body and bring the problem under control. Anti-inflammatory Foods for Diabetic Control

A diet to control diabetes is being shown to help treat or prevent a wide variety of chronic diseases that are plaguing us in ever growing numbers. Another way to look at our food choices is from the angle of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods. Is this different than what we have been recommending for three years? Considering foods from their impact on inflammation is just a different way to achieve the same end we are trying to accomplish with Low Glycemic foods, a proper protein, Carbohydrate and fat balance, and all the other things we talk about on this site. They are slightly different approaches to controlling type 2 diabetes but you will see a lot of commonality in the different ways they are presented and they are all working toward the same end. Here on we are looking for anything and everything that will help us maintain better blood glucose control.
Diet and life style defiantly impacts our risks for type 2 diabetes. New research released within the past 5 years is saying it is not just type 2 diabetes that is affected by diet. Type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, obesity; cancer, heart disease, stroke, Parkinson's, and rheumatoid arthritis and several others all have this dietary link in common. Ground-breaking research indicates that they may all begin with an inflammatory process.
Inflammation is the body's first line of defense against harmful invaders such as unwanted bacteria, viruses, and a multitude of other nasty critters. The inflammatory process has several soldiers in the form of white blood cells that act as protecting agents when the body is attacked.
Although this process is critical in maintaining the balance of health, researchers and scientists have now demonstrated that problems occur when the inflammatory process becomes chronic and no longer switches "off." In fact, some studies now indicate that inflammation may be the platform on which several disease processes begin.

Not Always Obvious

Unfortunately, the North American diet and lifestyle (which includes hydrogenated fats, a lack of omega-3 essential fats, high glycemic carbohydrates in the diet; smoking; and high levels of daily stress) all are thought to promote chronic inflammation. The stimulus that triggers the defense mechanism of inflammation is eaten, drunk, smoked, or otherwise experienced by millions of people who are unaware of the underlying damage they are causing.
Inflammation may not be detected by a blood test, x-ray, or other diagnostic measurement, but it is still occurring. On a microscopic level, inflammation can be silently and slowly wreaking havoc on your body's weakest link. The good news is that the inflammatory process can be halted and reversed simply by changing your diet and lifestyle.
By following the steps outlined below, you will be providing your system with the best defense against future illness and disease. If you are currently suffering from an inflammatory condition, this is a powerful treatment approach. These foods are also covered in other sections of the book from other points of view.

Trans Fatty Acids

Eliminate all chemically-produced fats (partially hydrogenated fats) from your diet. These fats are found in some margarines, some commercially-packaged foods such as chips, crackers, and cookies (check labels), and in various deep-fried foods such as french fries.

Red Meat and Cheese

Minimize red meat and cheese consumption. When the saturated fat found in these two foods is eaten in excess, inflammation occurs. Substitute egg whites, fish, beans whole grains, nuts, seeds, and lean chicken breasts without the skin.

Fish High in Mercury

Ensure fish you eat is low in mercury and other toxic residues such as dioxins. Purchase wild salmon and refer to for a listing of mercury levels in fish and seafood as measured by the US Food and Drug Administration between 1990 and 2003. Other better fish choices are the fish from the relatively pristine waters of New Zealand and the southern oceans.


Eat foods that are rich in phytochemicals (plant chemicals) that ward off and reverse inflammation. These foods include colorful fruits and vegetables such as berries, broccoli, squash, and sweet potatoes.


Eat an abundant amount of omega-3 foods such as walnuts, sesame seeds, and ground flaxseeds. In addition, supplement your diet with a minimum of 2 grams of distilled fish oils daily.


Ginger offers potent anti-inflammatory effects and can readily be incorporated as a seasoning on food or brewed as tea.


Drink six to eight glasses of fresh, clean water daily. Remember, though inflammation may not be seen or felt, changes may be occurring. Start taking preventive steps now by including anti-inflammatory foods in your daily diet to ensure your body's inflammatory switch is turned "on" only when necessary.

What are the inflammatory foods?

The following foods are considered among the inflammatory foods and can help you in deciding what is best for you to eat. Stay away from pro-inflammatory foods. A simple rule of thumb is to consider the following: If it contains flour, and/or sugar or other sweetener, it will be pro-inflammatory. Sugary, starchy foods are poor choices and will not only pack on excess pounds; they will add a lot of empty calories.

From the standpoint of inflammation, the foods to avoid would include:

Breads, rolls, baked goods
Cereals (except old fashioned oatmeal and whole grains)
Corn bread, corn muffins
Corn syrup
Egg rolls
Fast food
French Fries
Fruit juice, (choose the fruit instead)
Fried foods

Hard cheese (except for feta and grating cheeses, such as Romano and Parmesan)
Hot dogs
Ice cream, frozen yogurt, Italian ices
Jams, jellies and preserves
Margarine (hydrogenated variety)
Pita bread

Rice (except wild and brown)
Snack foods, including: potato chips, pretzels, corn chips, rice and corn cakes, etc.

The anti-inflammatory foods include:

Best protein choices (these are also rich in essential fatty acids, which help facilitate weight loss): Blue Hoki, Wild Alaskan salmon, halibut, herring, trout, anchovies and sardines. Seafood choices: Shrimp, scallops, clams, mussels, crab, lobster, bass, cod and flounder. Best poultry choices: Skinless chicken breast and skinless turkey breast. Other good sources of protein (choose low fat varieties if weight is a concern): Plain yogurt, high essential fatty acid eggs, plain kefir, cottage cheese and tofu. Grains and legumes: Old fashioned oatmeal (or better yet steel cut oats), whole grains, (Kamut, rye, quinoa, oats, barley. etc.) lentils, chickpeas, dried beans, and buckwheat. Fruits and Vegetables (The Rainbow Foods): Apples, artichokes, arugula, asparagus, avocado, bamboo shoots, bell peppers (green and red), berries (blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries), bok choy, broccoli, broccoli rabe, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cantaloupe, cauliflower, celery, cherries, chives, collards, cucumbers, dark green leafy lettuces (baby greens), eggplant, endive, escarole, fresh lemons, garlic, green beans, grapefruits (red and pink), honeydew melon, hot peppers, kale, leeks, mushrooms, onions, pears, pea pods, radish, rutabaga, scallions, swiss chard, spinach, sprouts, summer squash, tomatoes, turnips, water chestnut and zucchini. Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, macadamia nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, hemp seed and flaxseeds. Herbs and spices: Cinnamon sticks, dill, marjoram, parsley, turmeric, ginger root, basil, oregano, thyme, lemon balm, mint, sage and rosemary. Beverages: Green tea, water, Açaí (found in natural food stores), pomegranate juice (unsweetened). Condiments: Extra-virgin olive oil (look for Italian or Spanish high quality), cayenne pepper, salsa.

Regardless of which approach is used we still have the same goal, getter health through good diet. A good diabetic diet is one that helps control blood glucose. The higher the pH reading, the more alkaline and oxygen rich the fluid is. The lower the pH reading, the more acidic and oxygen deprived the fluid is. The pH range is from 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral. Anything above 7.0 is alkaline, anything below 7.0 is considered acidic.

Human blood stays in a very narrow pH range right around ( 7.35 - 7.45 ). Below or above this range means symptoms and disease. If blood pH moves to much below 6.8 or above 7.8, cells stop functioning and the patient dies. The ideal pH for blood is 7.4

A healthy blood pH has acid + alkaline balance almost equal. Actually a healthy body is slightly alkaline measuring approximately 7.4. This ideal blood 7.4 pH measurement means it is just slightly more alkaline than acid.

If you have a health problem, most likely you are acidic. If your body's pH is not balanced, you cannot effectively assimilate vitamins, minerals and food supplements. Your body pH affects everything. The body has to have a balanced pH like most living things on earth or it does not function correctly. The alkaline level is very important because research has already proven that disease cannot survive in an alkaline state and yet they thrive in an acidic environment.
An acidic balance will: decrease the body's ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients, decrease the energy production in the cells, decrease it's ability to repair damaged cells, decrease it's ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumor cells thrive, and make it more susceptible to fatigue and illness.

An acidic pH can occur from, an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, and/or immune reactions or any process that deprives the cells of oxygen and other nutrients. The body will try to compensate for acidic pH by using alkaline minerals. If the diet does not contain enough minerals to compensate, a build up of acids in the cells will occur.

Remember that the pH number is an exponent number of 10; therefore, a small difference in pH translates to a big difference in the number of oxygen or OH-ions. A difference of 1 in a pH value means ten times the difference in the number of OH-ions, a difference of 2 means one hundred times the difference in the number of OH-ions. In other words, blood with a pH value of 7.45 contains 64.9% more oxygen than blood with a pH value of 7.30.

If your body pH is not balanced, you cannot effectively assimilate vitamins, minerals and food supplements. Also, mucus on the small intestine can block your body from vitamin and mineral absorption. {This can be cleansed.}

How To Test Your pH Level

Test your pH level: If you are sick simply wet a piece of Litmus Paper with your saliva 2 hours after a meal. This will give a reflection of your state of health.
Salivary pH Test: While generally more acidic than blood, salivary pH mirrors the blood ( if not around meals ) and is also a fairly good indicator of health. It tells us what the body retains. Salivary pH is a fair indicator of the health of the extracellular fluids and their alkaline mineral reserves.
Optimal pH for saliva is 6.4 to 6.8. Spit upon arising before anything is put into the mouth. A reading lower than 6.4 is indicative of insufficient alkaline reserves. After eating, the saliva pH should rise to 7.8 or higher. Unless this occurs, the body has alkaline mineral deficiencies (mainly Calcium and Magnesium ) and will not assimilate food very well. To deviate from ideal salivary pH for an extended time invites illness.
Acidosis, an extended time in the acid pH state, can result in rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, lupus, tuberculosis, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, most cancers and many more. If salivary pH stays too low, the diet should focus on fruit, vegetables and mineral water as well as remove strong acidifiers such as sodas, whole wheat and red meat.
Urinary pH Test: The pH of the urine indicates how the body is working to maintain the proper pH of the blood. The urine reveals the alkaline building (anabolic) and acid tearing down (catabolic) cycles. The pH of urine indicates the efforts of the body via the kidneys, adrenals, lungs and gonads to regulate pH through the buffer salts and hormones. Urine can provide a fairly accurate picture of body chemistry, because the kidneys filter out the buffer salts of pH regulation and provide values based on what the body is eliminating. Urine pH can vary from around 4.5 to 9.0 for its extremes, but the ideal range is 5.8 to 6.8.
Foods considered to be alkaline-forming and thus helpful to people with consistently acid pH include: almonds, aloe vera, apples, apricots, bee pollen, buckwheat, cabbage, cantaloupe, celery, carrots, cucumbers, dairy products except hard cheese, dates, dulse, poached eggs, figs, grapefruit, honey, lettuce, millet, parsley, raisins, peaches, fresh red potatoes, pineapple, soy products, sprouted seeds, cooked spinach, turnip tops, wakame miso soup, azuki beans, rice, mineral water.
People who remain too acid often display symptoms such as: anxiety, diarrhea, dilated pupils, extroverted behavior, fatigue in early morning, headaches, hyperactivity, hypersexuality, insomnia, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, restless legs, shortness of breath, strong appetite, high blood pressure, warm dry hands and feet.

1. How to drink water for MAXIMUM effectiveness: Drink ½ your body weight of water in ounces, daily. Example: 180 lb = 90 oz. of water daily. Divide that into 8 or 10 oz. glasses and that's how many glasses you will need to drink, daily. This forth article is from Cedars.Sinai.ed. These last two articles will mention the drugs that are prescribed for lowering the levels of fat in the blood. Note however that they stress lifestyle and diet and certainly prefer that a person be able to discipline themselves to make the changes. High Cholesterol

The body needs two major kinds of fats in the bloodstream to operate well: cholesterol and triglycerides. They provide energy, protect the body from cold and help avoid injury. Fats and protein form lipoproteins, which travel throughout the bloodstream. High levels of fats, especially cholesterol, moving in the blood can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
There are two kinds of cholesterol. One is low-density lipoproteins (LDL). It is known as the "bad" cholesterol because it increases the risk of heart attack. Ideally, it should be less than 130mg/dl. The other is high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the "good" cholesterol. It lowers heart attack risk. It should be both above 40mg/dl and more than 25% of your total cholesterol.
An ideal total cholesterol level ranges from 140 to 200mg/dl. When it reaches 300, the risk of having a heart attack more than doubles.

Symptoms of High Cholesterol

There are no symptoms of high cholesterol unless the condition is severe. In such cases, fat deposits can form in tendons and skin or even cause severe stomach pain due to an enlarged liver or spleen.

Causes of High Cholesterol and Risk Factors

Some forms of high cholesterol are genetic. Others are a result of diet and lifestyle.

Diagnosis of High Cholesterol

A blood test is used to measure cholesterol levels. The readings will be more accurate when the patient has not eaten anything for at least 12 hours.

Treatment of High Cholesterol

The best way to get the body's cholesterol to normal levels is to make lifestyle changes:
Reduce the cholesterol and saturated fat in the diet
Increase fruits and vegetable servings to five to nine daily
Take in more water-soluble fiber, such as is in fruits, vegetables, legumes, oatmeal and oat bran
Exercise regularly
Reach an ideal weight
Stop smoking
Drink a small amount of alcohol daily (no more than two drinks)
If these measures do not lower cholesterol, a lipid-lowering drug may be prescribed.

What are triglycerides?

Why do high triglycerides matter?
Although the exact mechanism is unclear, high triglycerides may contribute to hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) or thickening of the artery walls — which increases the risk of stroke, heart attack and heart disease.
High triglycerides often accompany other conditions known to increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as well, including obesity and metabolic syndrome — a cluster of conditions that includes too much fat around the waist, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high blood sugar and abnormal cholesterol levels.
Sometimes high triglycerides are a sign of poorly controlled diabetes, low levels of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism), liver or kidney disease, or the use of certain medications. High triglycerides can also result from rare genetic conditions.

What's the best way to lower triglycerides?

Healthy lifestyle choices are key.
Lose excess pounds. If you're overweight, losing the excess pounds can help lower your triglycerides. Motivate yourself by focusing on the benefits of losing weight, such as more energy and improved health.
Consume fewer calories. Remember that excess calories are converted to triglycerides and stored as fat. Reducing your calories will reduce triglycerides.
Avoid sugary foods. Simple carbohydrates, such as sugar, can cause a sudden increase in insulin production. This can increase triglycerides.
Limit your cholesterol intake. Aim for no more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol a day — or less than 200 milligrams if you have heart disease. Avoid the most concentrated sources of cholesterol, including organ meats, egg yolks and whole milk products.
Choose healthier fats. Avoid saturated fat and instead choose healthier monounsaturated fat, found in olive, peanut and canola oils. In addition, eat fish high in omega-3 fatty acids — such as mackerel and salmon — instead of red meat.
Avoid alcohol. Alcohol is high in calories and sugar and has a particularly potent effect on triglycerides. Even small amounts of alcohol can promote high triglyceride levels.
Exercise regularly. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most or all days of the week. Regular exercise can boost "good" cholesterol while lowering "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides. Take a brisk daily walk, swim laps or join an exercise group.
It's also important to control diabetes and high blood pressure, if you have those conditions.

What about medication?

If healthy lifestyle changes aren't enough to control high triglycerides, your doctor may recommend medication. Cholesterol medications known as fibrates (such as fenofibrate or gemfibrozil) and nicotinic acids (such as niacin) are often effective for lowering triglycerides. If you also have low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or "good" cholesterol or high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol, your doctor may prescribe cholesterol-lowering statins or a combination of a statin and a fibrate or nicotinic acid.
If your doctor prescribes medication to lower your triglycerides, take the medication as prescribed. And remember the significance of the healthy lifestyle changes you've made. Drug therapy can help — but lifestyle matters, too.
